Mother nature took over on this one. I had rough turned this bowl months ago and unfortunately it developed a long crack in the endgrain on each side of the bowl. So I decided to let it finish drying and see if I could salvage it another way.

I re-mounted the dry bowl blank and turned it round again. Then took it to my shop and used a Bridgeport milling machine cut out the cracked areas. This created the two channels where I could add some handles.

Next was just to come up with a cool handle design. I made the handles so that the endgrain of the bowl is in the same orientation as the handles. Therefore the natural expansion and contraction of the two woods should work together.

And the finished serving bowl. Maple with Black Walnut handles, approx. 12" dia. and 5" deep.
